Description

In my head canon, Varrick is actually the Doctor's old friend Drax.  He got himself stranded in the Avatar universe during the Time War, making him another survivor (so that's three from Gallifrey; all former members of the Deca).  Like the rest of his people, however, he's stuck where he is.  And thus the Doctor believes him to be dead.  Drax has a working Tardis, but due to the events of the Time War and the damage his Tardis received in the conflict, he cannot easily get back to his own universe.  So he's decided to use the technology available to him to help him get home.  Or that would be available to him, if the power of suggestion prompts the people of this alternate earth to advance technologically much faster than they would without the influence of a centuries-old graduate of the Prydonian Time Lord Academy who is no more averse to cheating now than he was back when he secured his spot in the top ten of his class (through questionable means and the aid of an equally mischievous Theta Sigma).  Long story short, Drax is the one responsible for the Avatar world's schizo-tech.  After all, who needs to know the physics behind a hot air balloon when you've got a Time Lord to invent steam powered jet skis and gigantic friggin' drills for you?

Drax takes on the characteristics of his BFF Thete when he finds himself stranded on the Avatar earth.  He bops around through history and eventually picks up a companion: Captive-born Zhu Li of the Earth Kingdom as it was in the days of Kyoshi and Chin the Conqueror.  Eventually Drax settles in a particular time period where he feels he can bring the most influence, chooses an alias as a member of the Southern Water Tribe, and starts a global shipping empire to fund his various "scientific endeavors."  Typical Time Lord that he is, he doesn't care all that much whose toes he steps on in order to achieve his ultimate goal.  He'll definitely use and dump people without so much as a second thought.  After all, they're only humans.  But he soon finds that some of them have started to grow on him.  He starts to understand the Doctor's attachment to these peculiar beings that look so much like himself, but are simultaneously frailer than Time Lords, and stronger and more resilient than all of Time Lord society.

Eventually his past catches up with him.  First in the form of an old enemy that wants nothing more than to exterminate him, then in the form of his oldest buddy, the Doctor.  Eventually Drax is faced with a choice: Go home and (SPOILER!!!) help the Doctor find and restore Gallifrey, or stay and become the new Time Lord guardian of humanity, as the Doctor is for our universe.  After all, the avatar only protects humanity from itself.  It's up to a Time Lord to protect humanity from everything else.

By the way, Bolin has absolutely no clue just how big Varrick's "yacht" is on the inside.  Ping Ping is also larger on the inside than she is on the outside, thanks to standard Time Lord tech that can be used for all kinds of things, like installing hammerspace in one's pockets or in a nanny's handbag.

Due to Varrick's time travel capabilities, his global shipping empire, and the fact that he prefers to hedge his bets, it is safe to assume that Varrick is solely responsible for Zutara.

Cookie to anyone who can guess what Varrick is holding.  I'll give you a hint: It featured prominently in the adventure that introduced us to Drax, it has five accompanying pieces that fit together to form a cube, it can shape shift, and Vaatu (known on Doctor Who as the Black Guardian) would love to get ahold of it.

Backgrounds compiled from a variety of images found online.  Will make this available as a print sometime later, when I've constructed a bg all my own.

A fragment of the Key to Time would make an excellent power source for a Tardis, after all, each segment has a black hole incorporated into it's structure. What engineer wouldn't pass it up when the alternative is to scavenge for power, it's always good to stockpile what you know you'll need for later.
